Breeds

Breeds that appear in personal protection work

Breed is a starting filter, not a verdict. Individual temperament, health and training outweigh the name on the paperwork.

Who each breed tends to suit

01

Belgian Malinois

Very high energy and very attached to its handler. Best for experienced, active owners who enjoy daily structured work.

02

German Shepherd

Versatile and trainable, with a long history in police, military and family roles. Lines differ, so ask which one you are looking at.

03

Rottweiler

Powerful, steady and self-assured. Often calmer than herding breeds, and best with confident, consistent handling.

04

Doberman

Lean, quick and devoted. It tends to want constant contact with its person and dislikes long isolation.

05

Dutch Shepherd

A working breed from the Netherlands, uncommon in the US. Tough and trainable, though finding a reputable source takes care.

Choosing between them

  • Start with your daily routine and living space, then your experience, then the breed.
  • Ask for health testing records for the parents and the dog.
  • Meet the individual dog. Two dogs of one breed can be very different.

Quick answers

Is a bigger dog a better protector?

Not necessarily. Control, stability and training matter more than size, and a very large dog can be harder to handle and to insure.

Can a rescue become a personal protection dog?

It is uncommon. Professionals usually want known genetics and a proven temperament for this work.
